April 19-22 Update

Monday we read the story Spend It which is one of the books Liam received from the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. When this book first made it's way into our home I wasn't that big of a fan; at the time we were struggling with the boys and their strong consumerist habits (wanting a toy every time we went to the store). After reading the story I realized that this book can in fact be used in a positive way. Sonny the Bunny earns carrots each week and wants to buy 3 different items but doesn't have enough carrots to do so. We discussed basic math concepts, earning money, saving our money and the difference between what we need and what we want.

One thing that we have done in our home to teach our children about money, spending and saving is giving them a set amount for their birthday and preparing them in making a decision about what they will do. Remember, around 3 years old you can begin basic chores with your children and start teaching them about earning and spending.

Tuesday we read Try a Little Kindness. Kindness does not always come easy to children; if we were being honest even adults struggle with this one. It's important to talk about these positive behaviors as well as modeling them. This book discusses what kindness is and the things we can do to be kind to others. As you can see from our question Olivia is a friend who is constantly being kind to others and I appreciate what she adds to the classroom. Teaching without parent helpers this year has been difficult at times so having her model that behavior is huge.

Wednesday we read the story I Ain't Gonna Paint No More. This is a great book that introduces Rhyming in a fun and engaging way. Afterward I gave each of the children a word to Rhyme, some had an easier time than others but what I love about this class is that we enjoy helping each other out and don't make others feel bad.

Thursday was Earth Day but by Thursday we weren't really feeling like instructional time so we kept it short with a video about the Earth and one sharing what Earth Day is. After I briefly discussed the difference between garbage, recycling, compost and small things we all do on a daily basis we headed out to the playground.

As always we spent a lot of time outside. Lately Paisley, Harper and Jaycee have been building worm houses. This week Ruby and Cora joined in on the fun, I love the imagination and patience they put into their creations.

Have a great weekend!
